Frances Hodgson Burnett published The Making of a Marchioness in 1901. She had written Little Lord Fauntleroy 15 years before and would write The Secret Garden in 10 years' time; it is these two books for which she is best known. Yet Marchioness was one of Nancy Mitford's favourite books, was considered 'the best novel Mrs Hodgson Burnett wrote' by Marghanita Laski, and is taught on a university course in America together with novels such as Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, and Daisy Miller.

Strictly speaking, this book is not primarily a romance - but it is a beautifully romantic book. I loved it and absolutely hated to see it end.It was a wonderfully emotionally satisfying book. I had no idea this author had written adult books, so it was a treat to discover this one. Emily Seton-Fox made a simply perfect heroine - down on her luck yet never defeated, she was grateful for life - as hard as hers was. She learned to scrape by on a pittance and effaced herself selflessly to cater to the wishes of others. The reader learns to love her while watching her transform people near her by her gracious, thoughtful, thoroughly kind transactions. Once you are totally in Emily's corner, it is fascinating to see what happens when the eminently eligible Lord Walderhurst enters the scene.
Walderhurst is a middle-aged, extremely wealthy and powerful nobleman who is entirely secure in his self-worth. Against his inclination he has decided to remarry for the sake of the succession, but left to his own devices he would much prefer to remain unattached. He is also supremely selfish, wonderfully self-centered and an emotionally cold man.
He is vaguely attracted by Emily's unselfishness, realizing she would be willing to exert herself towards his comfort. Rather cold-bloodedly with no thought of love or emotion, he proposes they marry, and in so doing he sets in motion the events that will eventually rescue them both.
Before the marriage hardly begins, Walderhurst embarks on a diplomatic mission to India and leaves the new Marchioness on her own, where she begins to face dangers and threats to her life that he could not have anticipated. Even when faced with pure evil, Emily prevails - sustained by the love and protection extended to her from those whose loyalty she has earned. All the while, her love for her absent husband continues to grow and she yearns for his return, even though she has no expectation that he might return her regard.
And, when he returns - you must read this for yourself. The final chapters of this book are heart-wrenching and so beautifully written that they rank right up there as some of the best I've ever read. Need I recommend you read this lovely story????

The Making of a Marchioness (Audible Audio Edition) Frances HodgsonBurnett Lucy Scott Persephone Books Reviews
This is my favorite Frances Hodgson Burnett novel!!! I think it rates before The Secret Garden, although it is not for children.
I don't think the author can be beat for her characterizations and literary prose........ I'm constantly entranced with her style!!!
This is a classic book. It was mentioned as being among the favorites of young girls in Nancy Mitford's novel the Pursuit of Love.
If you are interested in English life and social class as expressed in great details of everyday life or you watch Downton Abbey, you used to watch Upstairs, Downstairs or you read romance novels, then read this book so you know the real story of women's life.
I found this book after stumbling on a different Persephone in a used book store. I am happy to report that both of these Persephones (the other was The Priory by Dorothy Whipple which I acquired for $1!) have been awarded the coveted 5 Star Pocketbat Rating.
Characters are well-drawn. Protagonist is sympathetic. Story is excellent. Although it has one weird tangent that I won't mention due to spoilers. But it all comes together.
Highly recommend!
This was an enjoyable little book. It actually includes two stories, Part One is how Emily came to marry Lord Walderhurst and become a Marchioness. I really enjoyed the story and the characters. Part Two was almost a whodunit. I didn't really think that it was particularly well-written or well executed. It was not up to the caliber of "The Secret Garden" or "A Little Princess", but overall, it was a quick read, and had its moments.
This book seem to have some great reviews. But I found it difficult to love. There was some charm to it. But certainly does not show women as strong. For a better read I would suggest Blue Castle by the same writer of Anne of Green Gables!
The story is an old-fashioned romantic fairy tale. Another reviewer called it a 'shopgirl novel' and I would agree with that. A pleasant diversion. The character of the heroine is to sublimely one dimensional. She is, literally, too good to be true. Surely she would have been a more interesting protagonist is she had even the slightest insight into her situation. As it is, she is so earnest and pure that she never sees her effect on others, never even seems to worry about anything except if she is 'good' enough. She is a cypher, a foil, for the more fully drawn characters of Maria and the Marquis. But even they, along with all the characters, are 'types' of the English titled classes. Readers have had the benefit of many other writers with the wit and skill to show, in stories about this period, entire personalities as they fit into the times in which they live. This to me is the essence of a good novel. But this story is a well told tale, and, as it should in romances like this, everyone but the bad guys lives happily ever after.
I like the style of writing. Today, too many authors do not bother to write well, as if they do not care either for the story or for their readers. That said, I enjoyed the story of two people who may have had social position (HE had a TITLE!), but who were in other ways ordinary, decent sorts with flaws and failings. Their love story is the kind that is both possible and probable, gentle and pleasant. If you want something to read that is soothing and undemanding, I recommend this book. If you are looking for a modern-day romance with sex and excitement, do not bother.
